Currently, the software has text tool tips for components, canvases, and trees; and static graphic tool tips for curve components; and preview of user component definition. We also provide tool tip for orthogonal wire which contains text information of the voltage. These tool tips are commonly used to gain quick insight into the state of the system by querying various signal points. It is single sample discrete information, and it is refreshed every quarter second.
Overlay graphs are typically used to display time-line waveforms. These graphs are specifically design to visualize entire sets or partial sets once the data has been collected. They can aloes be used to visualize data as the run is executing by enabling the follow-end-of-run feature. This was a smaller window can be selected and the graph will automatically scroll whenever the data reaches the end of the current window. Examining waveforms during a run most commonly involves study of the trend information available in the data. Trend data includes patterns that occur over longer time periods that are in the order of seconds.
When waveforms are periodic, often the trend information desired is in the form of smaller deviations from the periodic pattern. Current timeline tools are limited in their ability to visualize periodic waveforms.
Comparison of waveforms over narrow time periods is difficult and viewing the difference is currently done using follow-end-of-run. Phasor meters can be used sometimes but are limited in capability. No triggering of data related to time base.
An oscilloscope is a useful instrument available for testing circuits because it allows you to see the signals at different points in the circuit. The best way of investigating an electronic system is to monitor signals at the input and output of each system block, checking that each block is operating as expected and is correctly linked to the next.
A new component object has been created to view periodic waveforms over shorter time intervals. This is application area of an oscilloscope. The component is modelled on the principles of a real world device.
